API3 is a decentralized oracle protocol launched in December 2020 by a team led by Heikki Vänttinen and Burak Benligiray. How API3 Works#

API3 operates on a unique first-party oracle model where API providers run their own oracle nodes called Airnodes. Unlike traditional third-party oracles that act as intermediaries, Airnodes allow data providers to serve their APIs directly to smart contracts without requiring blockchain knowledge. The protocol uses a governance token (API3) and implements decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) governance to manage the ecosystem. API3's architecture includes dAPIs (decentralized APIs) that aggregate data from multiple first-party oracles, providing more secure and reliable data feeds.
